In 1830, the pirate brig Vineland was driven ashore off the coast of Coney Island after a violent chase. Word spread fast. Before authorities arrived, locals and scavengers swarmed the wreck, looting crates, weapons, and rumors of silver by lantern light. But the greatest prize was never claimed. By the time order was restored, the pirates had vanished—and so had the fortune in silver believed to be hidden somewhere beyond the reach of looters. One year later, the pirates were captured.
